(Lyrics & Music: Ian McLeish)
1.
I tried to write a song for you -
I couldn't do it;
I tried to give my heart to you -
You looked right through it;
Four long years I died inside, now that's
all I have to give to you -
But the memory of your tears keeps coming
through.
2.
I tried to make my life fit yours -
It wasn't in me;
I tried to open all your doors -
You tried to pin me;
And do you think I'm lying now? Will you ever
see my side?
And the memory of your pain is on my mind.
Bridge.
And if I live to be a hundred I'll still hurt
from hurting you -
And if I live to see the sunset, you know
I will be true -
To the memory of you...
3.
So I guess this is my song for you -
The circle's broken;
And it's funny how the verses grew -
When all my thoughts were spoken;
And now we go our separate ways, girl I know
you will survive -
And the memory of our love will stay alive.

Memory Of Our Love - Ottawa, Summer 1976.
Written for my first wife after we broke up.
Like the song says, I couldn't write about us while we were together but,
after the fall, it all came pouring out. Most of my songs are inspired
by real events, and then get twisted and molded into lyrics that fit the
tune, but this one was pretty much the real deal... I haven't seen her
in twenty-five years - I hope she's doing well.
