Now I don’t normally sing about murder, money, mayhem and manipulation, and my clear moral advice… having surveyed the facts… is: “Don’t do it!” If you plan to murder your lover to raise some cash, maybe try a financial adviser first.
I was fascinated and entranced by this song when I was a kid, sung first by Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, and later by Art Garfunkel. It was such a pretty song, but it was so dark. Actually, its origins are Irish (like so many musical and poetic things), and it later came to the Appalachians in West Virginia… possibly spread by just a single ramblin’ minstrel.
There is a theme of ritual misogyny that’s filtered through to the materialistic surface… the girl becomes pregnant, and is beaten and murdered to avoid family shame and financial ruin. But it runs much deeper than that. There is a link through the mystical poet W.B.Yeats to man’s search for sanctuary in the Divine feminine. Yeats had written this poem, ‘Down by the salley gardens’:
Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;
She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.
In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.
The girl offers peace, purity, tranquility and togetherness… she offers communion through love, intimacy, nature and gentle spiritual reflection. It is this that man mistreats and slaughters in his own soul, by pursuing a materialistic life. He murders his finer feeling. The song IS the girl… pretty, natural and pure; in touch with nature… and by singing it, the singer eventually moves towards self-realisation and atonement. At his life’s end, having destroyed all that was fair in his soul, by falling prey to the seven deadly sins for which he must pay the ultimate price, he constellates the girls’ sweet purity in song, and sacrifices his physicality to release his transformed spirit.
So this song which entranced me as a child, with its perplexing, gruesome beauty, now makes sense to me! Where I live in the Buda hills heading out of Budapest, there is a willow island in the little lake across the road, sitting beneath the summit of Kálvária-hegy (Calvary Hill). It was there that I came to recently realise the true meaning of this ballad, and I could then simply film for it in my garden!
