QUIET DAY

Lyrics: Chuck Kerr & Ian Mcleish
Music: John Millest

1.
    Once there was a man, not so long ago -
    Who climbed the heights, who played the game, but still he didn't know ;
    His face and name were on their lips, he never knew defeat -
    He was the best, he beat them all, the world was at his feet ;
    The interviews - the camera's flash - again he could not see -
    "My friend !" they cried - yes, one and all - but still alone was he...

Chorus 1.
    There's nothing I'd like better - there's nothing I'd rather do -
    Then sit here by the fire's light, framed with love for you ;
    And if our life gets better or if it stays the same -
    Just knowing you'll be here with me will keep me in the game.

2.
    So again he climbed, again he played, again they all concede -
    He stood above - atop them all - yet all but he could see ;
    Once there was a man, not so long ago -
    Who climbed no heights, who played no game - yet still he came to know -
    To be the best, to beat the odds - this is what he learned :
    To love and share with one so near simply must be earned...

Chorus 2.
    There's nothing I'd like better - there's nothing I'd rather do -
    Then sit here on a quiet day, breathing close to you ;
     And if our life gets better, or if it stays the same -
     Just knowing you'll be here with me will keep me in the game ;
    There's nothing I'd like better - there's nothing I'd rather do -
     Then sit here on a quiet day, sharing it with you...

Quiet Day - Ottawa, Winter 1993.
One of John's instrumental bits that I loved, so I wrote some words to his music. But though the choruses worked, I just couldn't get the verses the way I wanted them. It might have stayed that way, but Chuck wanted to take a crack at it - he'd written a few lyrics before, but nothing that really clicked. This time, though, he did a great job - the finished lyric is his verses and my choruses set to John's melody. A wonderful time was had by all!
