THROW
MY HEART AWAY
Lyrics & Music: Ian McLeish
1.
What's wrong with me? I wish I knew -
I can't seem to find or hold a heart's that true -
I want it so badly I ache deep inside;
I'm ready to cast off my tears and my pride -
It's happened before and it's happened today -
I meet someone new and I throw my heart away...
2.
She's a lovely girl - she's so very young;
She's a melody - she's a song to be sung -
I want just to tell her the way that I feel -
I want to unburden this heart that won't heal;
I'm gonna be strong and I'll mean what I say -
Then I see her again and I throw my heart away...
Bridge.
Throw my heart away - I've got no common sense;
Throw my heart away - I can't sit on a fence;
Throw my heart away - I'm bluer than blue;
Throw my heart away and I'm throwing it away on you.
3.
So I'll hide my pain and I'll paint on a smile -
I know my time will come, it's just gonna take a while;
Somewhere you're ready and waiting for me -
Your songs in my heart, girl, I can set you free;
You're tired and you're lonely, you've had a bad day -
You'll hear my refrain and you'll throw your heart away...
Tag.
Nothing I can do or say can change the way I feel today -
Nothing in this heart of mine can help this poor boy hold the line;
Though I'm trying to be strong, I'm holding on for far too long
-
There's nothing I can do to take the place of finding you;
If another girl could be what someone else once was to me -
Then I'd let my feelings show, but loves a game, it comes and goes;
Nothing I can do or say can change the way I feel today -
Nothing in this heart of mine can help this poor boy hold the line;
Nothing I can do or say can change the way I feel today -
I am going to find you and I'll throw my heart away...

Throw My Heart Away - Winter 1980, Toronto.
Written after spending some time with a young
woman - strictly platonic, you understand - but it brought out feelings
that had been buried for a while. I hadn't had a serious relationship in
a couple of years and I was aching for that special place that only being
with someone fulfills. The tag was improvised during the demo recording
session, and I liked it so much I kept it. It turned out to be one of my
best written and best loved songs.
